Under Section 10A of the Official Languages (Amendment) Act, 2021, public bodies are required to spend 5% of their annual advertising budget on Irish language media: ‘A public body shall ensure that … at least 5 per cent of any money expended by the body on advertising in any year shall be used to place advertising in the Irish language through Irish language media’. Public bodies are also required to have 20% of their advertisements in Irish: ‘A public body shall ensure that … at least 20 per cent of any advertising placed by the body in any year shall be in the Irish language’. These Irish language advertisements can be placed in Irish language media as well as English language media.
